CannaGather celebrated its five-year anniversary with a night filled with awards and a presentation by Bruce Linton, Founder, Chairman, and Co-CEO of Canopy Growth Corporation [NYSE: CGC]. In a ceremony held at the historic Prince George Ballroom with over 350 attendees, movers and shakers in the New York City cannabis industry community were recognized in four different categories: Entrepreneurs, Operators, Investors, and Champions. Entrepreneurs were recognized among cannabis-related companies with a value/market cap less than $25 million; Operators were recognized among cannabis-related companies with a value/market cap greater than $25 million; Investors were recognized among capital markets; and Champions were recognized among individuals or organizations for their outstanding work in Legalization, Social Justice/Equity, and Analogous Industry Driving Forces.

On January 15, 2019, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his team — led by Assistant Counsel to the Governor for Health Axel Bernabe and Assistant Counsel to the Governor Jason Starr — published draft budget legislation for New York State cannabis legalization. Although the proposal wasn’t included in the state budget that went into effect on April 1, 2019, it’s commendable that political leaders like Governor Cuomo are fighting to legalize cannabis via the state legislature.
Senators Liz Krueger and Diane J. Savino and Majority Leader Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes
Senator Diane Savino has long-championed access to cannabis in New York State by steering the state’s medical legislation, the 2014 Compassionate Care Act, and is a full-on advocate for an adult-use market in the state. The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA) was sponsored by State Senator Liz Krueger and Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, which lays out a framework in which half of marijuana tax revenue after program costs would go towards community grants and reinvestment funds.

Women Grow is a for-profit entity that serves as a catalyst for women to influence and succeed in the cannabis industry as the end of marijuana prohibition occurs on a national scale and strives to connect, educate, inspire and empower the next generation of cannabis industry leaders by creating programs, community, and events for aspiring and current business executives.

Start SMART NY: Doug Greene and Noah Potter with Empire State NORML and Kassandra Frederique and Melissa Moore with Drug Policy Alliance
Start SMART NY – Sensible Marijuana Access through Regulated Trade – is the campaign dedicated to ending marijuana prohibition in New York with the belief that it is time to stop the ineffective, racially biased, and unjust enforcement of marijuana prohibition and to create a new, well-regulated, and inclusive marijuana industry that is rooted in racial and economic justice.
New York County District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr.; Kings County District Attorney Eric Gonzalez; and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams
After an extensive six-month review of other jurisdictions around the country in which marijuana is no longer prosecuted criminally, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute marijuana smoking and possession cases as of Aug. 1, 2018 and in September, District Attorney Cy Vance moved to dismiss and seal virtually every open marijuana case dating back to 1978.
In December of 2018, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that he would follow through on plans to wipe out more than 1,400 warrants in misdemeanor weed possession cases, as well as over two dozen past convictions.
As a continued advocate for adult-use cannabis with tax revenue reinvested in communities that have been most harmed by racially-based law enforcement of drug laws, Jumaane Williams introduced the Marijuana Reform Act at the City Council, which would prohibit employment discrimination, as well as against license applications, by city agencies based on marijuana-related arrests and convictions.
